Old Doug was tending the ram band up on the western slope of the Bighorn Mountains one summer when we followed the faint track to his cabin. You could see for a zillion miles from there and the sheep grazed the alpine meadows that climbed up the slopes and weaved into the dark timber. It was my firm impression then that Doug had it all. He was a happy man here, and the seclusion kept him from the bottle that so troubled him in winter when the sheep were down out of the mountains and town was too near.
Two dogs, a horse, and a spring box for keeping foods were outside the coziest little cabin I could imagine. Inside was everything life required in a compact space. At night in that high country you could almost touch the stars. Doug is gone now, felled by whiskey one Saturday night in town during the winter.
I guess Line Camp Cabin is really a monument to Doug and his cabin up on government lease land in Wyoming. They no doubt, inspired it.Comments on Line Camp Cabin:
"I return to the porch and begin to record in my journal the experiences I have had this day. For the first time in years, I feel like myself again. Not a mom, not a wife, not a laundress, waitress, cook, chauffeur, but ME." T.J. from Iowa
"This is a wonderful haven. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided. Our dinner turned out great and the spectacular storm held off until we finished cooking outdoors." Linda and Scott, Kansas
"Funny how this is always the hardest part -- the last day, packing to leave, getting out of bed in the morning knowing the inevitable. Our stay was perfect, beautiful, peaceful and calming. John & Susan, Kansas City
"Line Camp was above and beyond our expectations on our honeymoon. We will definitely recommend it to our friends and family." Nolls, Saint Louis
"It is a wonderful and strange thing to be transported to another century. Call me crazy, but it would be kind of cool if I could live half here-and-now and the other half in the 19th century. Thanks for helping me realize my fantasy. L.W., Denver
