Across The Fence

                                                         (April 2003)

The hired man says: "Green-up has finally come to the place down here in the hills.  We've a hard time getting shed of winter, but I think we have it on the run now. Come see us!."

Rx from Doctor Tom.   Had too much of war, terrorism, and general human strife?   How about traffic, noise, pressure at work, an unreasonable boss?  My prescription: Come away from all of it.  Take a break in the country!.  Return to the hills.  Turn off the cell phone, the TV and the radio. (Go on a news fast.)  Listen to the turkeys gobble, the owls hoot, the coyotes sing. Watch the stars at night.  Fish a little.   As one of our guests put it, "Nature is the one sure remedy for the stresses of modern life."   If needed, I will write you a prescription that you can take to your spouse or your boss.  Just let me know and I'll email it too you or whomever you like.  Click here.

"Mister Big" our buggy horse is going back to work after a long winter rest.  It's just too cold in an open buggy during the winter.  (Even the Amish use closed buggies in cold weather.)  He has been outfitted with a new pair of shoes and is undergoing the process of working out some of his winter kinks.  We tell guests that we can't always promise to take them on a buggy ride, but its something we enjoy and try to do, providing we have the time and the weather cooperates. When you arrive, just make sure we know you would like a leisurely ride behind Mr. Big.  We'll try our best.

Our award winning B&B.   We have discovered that we were selected as the Editor's Choice for the top bed & breakfast in Missouri by Rural Missouri Magazine Wow!   I suspect the editors are country folks and not all that impressed with city B&Bs, so we got a little leg up.   To see the full article and winners in all the "best in Missouri" categories Click here.

A Turkey Hunting Getaway.  This year we have decided to offer turkey hunting privileges  to one party during the season (April 21 to May 11).  There are plenty of turkeys on our 150 acres.  Just a few days ago we saw three big gobblers strutting right outside our bedroom window.  If you would like to be the designated hunting party (max 3 hunters) let us know at the time you reserve your stay.

We're proud of our eagles.  Our year-round raptor neighbors are now on their nest preparing for a new brood of eaglets.  Perhaps you did not know that eagles mate for life, set up housekeeping and put down roots, so to speak.  Our breeding pair have been here for 15-20 years, raising two and occasionally three young each year. They add nesting material every season until the massive nest  becomes so heavy that it breaks the limbs and falls from the giant sycamore tree. They are now in their third nest, all of which have been within 300 yards of each other. If you come in June you'll likely see the fledged young eaglets strutting around on the gravel bar beneath the bluff.

Our short getaway will come in early May, when leave with our travel trailer.  Or, as they would say in England, we will hitch our caravan to our lorry and go.  While we are away we will be keeping our cottages open for guests.  Our inn sitter, Carma, will be taking care of guests and making reservations while we are away.  Carma is a local gal with a broad array of talents.  We're sure you will enjoy meeting her.

Our frequent stay program.  Occasionally we forget to tell guests about this program, so remind us during your next getaway.   It's quite simple.  Six stays earns you a $100 gift certificate to Rock Eddy Bluff Farm on the Gasconade river or to more than one hundred other Bed and Breakfasts in Missouri. To get you going, we'll give you the card and a brochure listing other members of  Bed & Breakfast Inns of Missouri

Get your free book.  Just a reminder about our offer:  Stay any two weekdays (Sunday- Thursday) during April and May and we'll give you your choice of three books:  Missouri Wildflowers,  Trees of Missouri, or a Missouri B&B Inns cookbook.

Our pal Captain Mock finally broke down and got a website.  So now we can introduce you to his and Miss Connie's special place up in North Missouri.  We find that folks who come to Rock Eddy Bluff Farm appreciate our uniqueness and country flavor.  That's why we suspect that Mockville Land and Cattle Co. will interest you too.  Yep, its out of the way, just like our place.   Captain Mock will take you on a guided horseback ride on the ranch and you can bunk at Lottie's boarding House. Check it out at www.mockville.com   As Captain Mock says, "If you've done it, it ain't braggin!"
