"It thins your blood ," was the explanation folks here abouts gave for eating several "messes" of greens each spring.  True or not, greens can be tasty fare -- improving vastly on spinach.  Mushrooms are simply a country delicacy and searched for far and wide this time of year.  Mushrooms are now up. (We've had a good mess.)  Greens are available if you know what to pick.  Poke salad, a common green, is yet to come.

Famous among barns.  Rural folks (those who get electricity from a rural coop) were treated to a fine article about Rock Eddy Bluff Farm in Rural Missouri, the statewide monthly magazine for coop members.  The article, "A Place to Relax," is also up on the organization's web site.  View it at  http://www.ruralmissouri.org/Aprilresort.html

Our French Innkeeper exchange, was the grand happening in March.  Philippe has become our pal after he stayed a week at Rock Eddy Bluff last winter.  Our visit to his  gite (like a bed and breakfast) was simply wonderful!  We have prepared a quick web page describing our French adventure.  Click on this link: http://www.rockeddy.com/Etoile.htm

Become a Rock Eddy naturalist.  Guests find that their appreciation of the natural word expands substantially when they are able to identify many plants, trees and birds they observe on  walks.  We are always eager to help if we can, but identification books are invaluable.  We are stocking a supply of books which you may want for your own.  Trees of Missouri and Missouri Wildflowers are available for purchase at our cost.  Other smaller pamphlets are free.

Jump in a canoe and go.  Here at the river canoes are available whenever guests decide to embark.  There is lots exploring to be done right here, along with some popular fishing spots.  However, when a longer float is desired, we recommend one of the local canoe outfitters.  Trips of varying lengths can be arranged.  One we often recommend is:  Country View Acres (near Dixon), Phone (573) 759-7363.

Rock Eddy Stuff.   The bald eagle pair beneath the bluff have hatched a couple of babies.  Fledging may not be too far off.   The  Heron rookery on the island has only 3 or 4 occupied nests this spring.  We're worried about that.  Two of our horses, "Woodrow" and "Meadow" are schedule to attend the Amish training school run by our friend "Iddo".

Gas prices have everyone concerned, especially those in the hospitality and tourists industry.   Will people cancel vacations, or will they simply vacation closer to home?  Remains to be seen!

Sour dough bread, gardening and lots more are covered in this on-line magazine, Countrylife.net.  Find out about alternative power off the grid.  Link to the Amish hardware store, Lehman's where you can buy practically anything non-electric.  Click here to see.

Til next we meet, Tom & Kathy
