Across The Fence

Laura Ingalls and her sister Mary
were our recent guests at Line Camp Cabin.  Mary (on left) pictured here with Laura were Abigail and Hannah Bartee.  Their grandparents, Karen and Steve Sandy,  treated them to a taste of olden days in the trees at Rock Eddy Bluff.  "Yes,"  they knew Line Camp Cabin was too small for four people, "but don't you know,"  said the girls, "Laura, and Mary and Ma and Pa slept in a cabin just this small in The Little House in the Big Woods." A great time was had by all, including your hosts.   Our guests make this work fun!  (For the definitive Laura Ingalls Wilder web site Click here

Horses, whole hog sausage, chicken, quilts, and Sunday.  What do these have in common?  Answer:  The fall festival at Brinktown Parish Hall (14 miles).  The best finger licking Sunday dinner you'll have this Fall is at the Parish church on October 13.  It's become a autumn  happening, with horses and wagons making their way to this Catholic dinner at a tiny country burg.   Sometimes the line for dinner may be long, but always the parishioners have made a feast fit for Sunday guests.  Best of all, you will find lots of parish picnics and fall festivals in little German Catholic towns scattered throughout the countryside near here.  And, there are rodeos, the Dixon "Cow Days,"  a Bluegrass festival, and the Maries County Fair.  Check  the dates at our new "Nearby Events" page at:  www.rockeddy.com/Events.htm

Summer is farm auction time in these hills.  You can wait all day and get out-bid for that stone crock that would make a great umbrella stand in the foyer.  But if you are the winning bidder on a box of junk, you may strike it rich.  Does your nose itch?  Forget it!  Scratch and you may actually buy something. "SOLD to the lady in the straw hat!"  Farm sales provide a form of entertainment for lots of folks in these hills.  This photo was taken of the auction of an old friend, gone years ago.  We remember him by the things we bought at the sale.

Amish friends nearby have often referred to items they read in The Budget, their newspaper.  Intrigued, we ordered a subscription for ourselves.  From the latest issue: "Looking for a more modest swimsuit?  Higher neckline, thigh-length skirt, textured, less clingy fabric.  Stitching Times: 717-285-5004, ask for Debbie."  Or this from the reporter in the Amish settlement at LaPlata, Missouri: " ....Abe Shetler went home to rest a bit and check on his chicks (started ones) they got on the Fri. before.  To his dismay, there were only 5 live ones left out of the 25!  Well. the damage being done, he lay down and slept and when he woke up and checked again the other 5 were gone and only one dead one left.  So he got some traps and set them to where he figured the fox would get in at least on of them.  It worked. He caught his own dog."

A full page of Amish verse in each issue of The Budget is dedicated to the memories of loved ones.  We can't resist a brief sample from a poem dedicated to John Miller, died June 1997.   "...Times have changed in many ways,/  But one thing changes never;/   The memories of those happy days,/   When we were all together...    From a lonely wife and family."

What animal made this?   This is a test of your Missouri outdoor knowledge.  This time of year, you frequently see these little mud huts on the banks of the slough to the river. No, we've never seen one of these creek critters make one of these, but that it is their home in the mud seems to be common knowledge. Answer (backwards): "dadwarc."

The season of Barbeque is here.  Here is our contribution, a dry rub that you can keep for later use.  We have used it on pork and ribs and it adds a wonderful tangy taste that we think you'll love.  For the simple recipe,  Click here!

Smaller telephone bills but fewer conversations with guests are result of our  on-line availability calendar and on-line reservations requests.  Ok! That's good and bad!  Still, guests tell us the  on-line information has been a great help.   They plan getaways and vacations while looking at our calendar and then call or email.  Check it out if you haven't done so already.    We still miss the old ways sometimes, but we are determined to keep up with technology.  Well, almost!

The cookbook is out!   Published by Missouri's Inn Association, the book was long-awaited.  Title: Sunrise Inn Missouri: A Collection of Signature dishes from Missouri's Finest.  Recipes are chosen ones from various inns, and you will find our place represented with three savory contributions.  We'll have copies of the cookbook here for you to peruse or  you can order on-line from www.Amazon.com   Search for "Sunrise Inn Missouri."

All our summer best from the bluff, Tom & Kathy Corey

"I want to go soon and live away by the pond where I shall hear the wind whispering among the reeds. It will be success if I have left myself behind. But my friends ask what will I do when I get there. Will it not be employment enough to watch the progress of the seasons?"

Henry David Thoreau, 1841
