Across The Fence

Simple Stress Test.  In our last newsletter we offered to write a prescription for rest, relaxation, and renewal at Rock Eddy Bluff Farm. We had some takers and lots more folks who reserved their stay without the Rx.  This time we are offering a method of detecting stress in your life -- thereby indicating the need for a visit to the Ozark hills.   The test is quite simple.  At right is a photograph of two dolphins.   If you can see both you are fine.  If you see one dolphin and anything else, you are quite stressed and surely in need of a getaway.

Trails through the woods have opened this spring.  When the forest was barren last winter we constructed narrow trails in the trees where we guessed folks would like to hike. Next time you are here, try a walk on "Bull Lizard Point Trail," where you will be lead for about a half mile to the end of a flat ridge that peers out into the river valley. It joins "Roberson Road" which partially retraces an old track that led to a log cabin that once stood in the space in the woods now occupied by Line Camp Cabin.

Now open September Getaways.   If you have looked at our online reservation calendar previously and noted that we were solidly booked for September, you may want to look again.   The reason:  we had blocked the days off for our vacation.   Now, our inn sitter friend, Carma, says she will keep the place open for all except the last September week.  What a great month here on the bluff.  Click to check the calendar for September or any month.

Fall Happenings.     If you are a fan of bluegrass music, don't forget the Bluegrass festival near Dixon, held on Memorial day.   And there is also the fabulous Maries Country Fair in Vienna. September also marks the beginning of the season for fall festivals hosted by the local small town catholic parishes.  Sit down to scrumptious country cooking and fun for Sunday dinner.

Horses and Cayuses Welcome.   If you have your own horse please feel free to bring it (them) along on your getaway to Rock Eddy Bluff Farm. (Please let us know in advance.)  Guests have a great time riding the few trails here and the small, little-used back roads.  We can put your horse up in the round pen or the small corral near the Indian House Bluff and there is no charge if you bring your own feed .  Also check out this horse information from the University of MO.   http://muextension.missouri.edu/explore/agguides/ansci/horses.htm   For those with no horses, let us know and we can try to take you on a horse-drawn wagon excursion.

Recipe:  Savory Summer Scones are a tasty treat with a little different attitude.  And, like many of our recipes, this one lends itself to personalization.  Try it with the herbs and cheeses shown, then next time -- if you are adventurous -- add or subtract ingredients that your taste tells you might work well.  For the recipe, Click Here.

Clifty Creek Natural Bridge is a favorite hiking destination for many of our guests, especially on warm summer days.  Meander up the gravel creek bed to Clifty arch at your leisure, taking in the unique flora and fauna, and perhaps stopping for a dip in one of the spring fed pools. Today Clifty hollow is much the same as described in this 1873 Missouri Geological survey. "A perfectly clear stream of water courses through this valley.  The bottoms near are overspread with a dense growth of trees and vines, amount which I noticed the Muscadine grape.  The valley.....is wild, picturesque and romantic in its loneliness."  If you are truly adventurous we'll give you directions to the old hermitage in a cave up the hollow.

All our best from the Ozark hills,
