Across The Fence
Fog comes to the valley
during the night in autumn. In the morning it often lays from horizon to
horizon like smoke in a broad bowl, covering all reference points. Then it
wafts away into the oncoming day and the sun, gradually revealing
scattered tree tops, then a hill, then the broad panorama of the valley
below. Some prefer other seasons, but for us, give us fall!. It's a
season of wood smoke, chill in the air, a frenzy of colors across
the hills, all beneath a now-deepening blue.
A popular time here at the Bluff farm is autumn! Many guest reserve for autumn upon departing during other seasons. That is why weekend reservations for fall go quickly. But if you can find time for autumn's beauty during the week, a getaway may be food for the soul. Feel the need? Check dates available on our new on-line calendar. Winter is wonderful!
The autumnal equinox
will occur this year at exactly 6:05 p.m. CDT on September 22, signaling the
official beginning of Fall. Equinox: the point in the annual
calendar when the sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are the
same in length. Ancient people observed events such as this at
Stonehenge in southern England. But do you know there is another
Stonehenge not far from Rock Eddy Bluff? Constructed on the
campus of the University of Missouri - Rolla, this more geometrical megalith
used computers instead of celestial observation to position the
stones. An interesting side trip!
Enter the log cabin contest. It will be fun to show you the progress of our log cabin in future issues of this letter. Right now we have the cabin disassembled and stacked in a pile. You'll love the site where it will be rebuilt. It will sit in the trees over the break of a hill, looking down a hollow and into the river valley. The cabin is an old hand-hewn original with dove tail log notches. It will have an upper floor and a large porch. We want your suggestions for a name for the cabin -- funny, serious, back woodsy, anything you like. If we select a name you suggest for the cabin you'll win two nights stay there (when it is finished).
Our funny bone got
tickled the other
day by the following quotation: It was billed as the winner of a
contest for the worst opening lines for books. See what you
think! "The
sun oozed over the horizon, shoved aside darkness, crept along the
greensward, and, with sickly fingers, pushed through the castle window,
revealing the pillaged princess, hand at throat, crown asunder, gaping in
frenzied horror at the sated, sodden amphibian lying beside her, disbelieving
the magnitude of the frog's deception, screaming madly, "You
lied!"
Lost in the Maine woods is where we will be in September. You can, of course, call while we are gone. Norma or George will be staying at the Bluffhouse and can reserve your stay. Best to check availability first and be aware that the on-line calendar won't get updated until we return. We'll be back in the final days, primed for a glorious October.
Neat links. Check out this topographical map showing Eddy Bluff Farm. You can use the link to find a map for anywhere. And, our favorite bit of wisdom, Desiderata, should you need some sensible, soothing words today.
Until next time, Kathy and Tom
