"Spring rides no horses down the hill, but comes on foot a goose girl still." I never fail to recall that line from Edna St. Vincent Millay, whenever I feel Spring edging closer. It is not far off now, and this time of year the greening of the hills is such a welcome promise. Perhaps we will see you here, in one of the old-timey cabins or the modern cottage and suite. The land beck
ons!
Now to finish the poem: "And all the loveliest things there be / Come simply, so it seems to me. / If ever I said , in grief or pride, / I tired of honest things, I lied: / And should be cursed forevermore / With love in laces, like a whore, / And neighbors cold, and friends unsteady, / And Spring on horseback, like a lady!"May is now open! If you have looked at out website recently and noted there we no opening in May, look again! Our inn sitter, Carma, has found that she can be at the Bluff in May. Since we are
going to be away, that allows us to put the whole month back on the availability calendar. Thus, the "pickins" among dates in May are good. And a fine month it is too!
Among the earliest flowers in the hills is a tiny little plant named Spring Beauty. The photo shows them adorning the floor of the woods here at the bluff. They'll arrive any time now. Overhead, geese have been winging northward in huge flocks for weeks.
Toward evening the owls have been calling sweet nothings across the hollers. Coyotes often chime in. The eagles have taken to their nest. Fish in the river are developing the urge to bite. Mushrooms are preparing to hide in the woods. It is a grand time for both flora and fauna. And, a wondrous time for people!
Bluegrass show April 9. For those who love bluegrass, this is a good show. It is in the high school auditorium where Kathy and I both went to school. Most folks bring a lawn chair and set it up on the floor. Sponsored by the local Historical Society. If your interested, call and we'll point you right.
Aunt Phoebes Perch is a hit. Since we opened this reconstructed 1800's hand-hewn log cabin, several folks have enjoyed this unique accommodation. And, they are telling us more about Aunt Phoebe and her cabin in stories they are leaving. http://www.rockeddy.com/aunt_phoebe.htm
Changes in the website. More photos and info. We have made changes so that folks can get a better feel for our varied accommodations. Each one now has its own page with photos and an expanded description. Check it out at: www.rockeddy.com/acc.html
Bull Lizard trail was readied for a gentle walk in the woods last winter. A simple sign this spring will show you where to find it. The trail runs out to the head of Fischer Hollow and out on the flat ridge leading to Bull Lizard Point. From there, you can return through the woods or find your way down through a grove of cedar trees into the holler and on out to the river. You'll reach the river at the point where the canoes are tied. You can combine a hike with a canoe ride in the slough and river.
Fishing on the Gasconade River beneath the bluff is always an experience. W
hile it is a noted small mouth bass river, results vary day to day and between anglers. If you are planning a fishing outing, check out the Conservation Department web site for complete regulations, tips and helpful information. http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/fish/
Try our spring salad recipe. The sweet and sour dressing is the key to this delightful mix of greens. Check it out: click here.
"Rock Eddy Bluff People". Visitors to Rock Eddy Bluff are a special breed. We realized that long ago, as they are willing to eschew the worm tourist ruts in favor of an authentic country experience. Where else can you seclude yourself in the timber and relive times more than a century ago? Few places we know of! One such place is that of our friends at Mockville Land and Cattle www.mockville.com If you know of others, please let us know. We'll share with our guests.
All our best from the hills, Kathy and Tom Corey 1-800-335-5921
"Glowing logs, a thousand stars, sun-warmed porch, weather-red homestead... conversation with good friends and promontory reverie. Loved our stay as always." Angelica, St. Louis
