It was in the spring after the force of winter had subsided and when the serviceberry and dogwood were in bloom. We built a wood fire outside the cottage to spend a calming evening together, warming and gazing out across the hills. Now it was dark, and in the firelight the stories began – always scary stories.
As if on clue, a barred owl hooted somewhere back in the timber. “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for me?” Slow and mournful and answered by another owl up on Happy Ridge, echoing across the hollow. The things I remember about that night were how the children’s eyes were wide and shown in the firelight, and how we slept peacefully and well until morning.
